Quasi-Gaussian Statistics of Hydrodynamic Turbulence in 3/4+\epsilon dimensions

The statistics of 2-dimensional turbulence exhibit a riddle: the scaling exponents in the regime of inverse energy cascade agree with the K41 theory of turbulence far from equilibrium, but the probability distribution functions are close to Gaussian like in equilibrium. The skewness \C S \equiv S_3(R)/S^{3/2}_2(R) was measured as \C S_{\text{exp}}\approx 0.03. This contradiction is lifted by understanding that 2-dimensional turbulence is not far from a situation with equi-partition of enstrophy, which exist as true thermodynamic equilibrium with K41 exponents in space dimension of d=4/3d=4/3. We evaluate theoretically the skewness \C S(d) in dimensions 4/3≤d≤2{4/3}\le d\le 2, show that \C S(d)=0 at d=4/3d=4/3, and that it remains as small as \C S_{\text{exp}} in 2-dimensions.Comment: PRL, submitted, REVTeX 4, 4 page

Stretching of polymers in a random three-dimensional flow

Behavior of a dilute polymer solution in a random three-dimensional flow with an average shear is studied experimentally. Polymer contribution to the shear stress is found to be more than two orders of magnitude higher than in a laminar shear flow. The results indicate that the polymer molecules get strongly stretched by the random motion of the fluid.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Capital-skill complementarity and inequality: a macroeconomic analysis

The notion of skilled-biased technological change is often held responsible for the recent behavior of the U.S. skill premium, or the ratio between the wages of skilled and unskilled labor. This paper develops a framework for understanding this notion in terms of observable variables and uses the framework to evaluate the fraction of the skill premium's variation that is caused by changes in observables. A version of the neoclassical growth model is used in which the key feature of aggregate technology is capital-skill complementarity: the elasticity of substitution is higher between capital equipment and unskilled labor than between capital equipment and skilled labor. With this feature, changes in observables can account for nearly all the variation in the skill premium over the last 30 years. This finding suggests that increased wage inequality results from economic growth driven by new, efficient technologies embodied in capital equipment.Income distribution ; Education ; Wages

Community College Student Engagement Patterns: A Typology Revealed Through Exploratory Cluster Analysis

    Get PDF
This study employs survey data from the Center for Community College Student Engagement to examine the similarities and differences that exist across student-level domains in terms of student engagement in community colleges. In total, the sample used in the analysis pools data from 663 community colleges and includes more than 320,000 students. Using data-mining techniques to discover a parsimonious number of natural clusters and, in turn, a k-means cluster analysis as a means of revealing a naturally occurring typology of engagement patterns, our findings reveal that support service utilization is the most distinguishing feature of the similarities and dissimilarities across student groups, suggesting areas for further theory development and testing

The Spitzer c2d Survey of Nearby Dense Cores: VI. The Protostars of Lynds Dark Nebula 1221

    Get PDF
Observations of Lynds Dark Nebula 1221 from the Spitzer Space Telescope are presented. These data show three candidate protostars towards L1221, only two of which were previously known. The infrared observations also show signatures of outflowing material, an interpretation which is also supported by radio observations with the Very Large Array. In addition, molecular line maps from the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory are shown. One-dimensional dust continuum modelling of two of these protostars, IRS1 and IRS3, is described. These models show two distinctly different protostars forming in very similar environments. IRS1 shows a higher luminosity and larger inner radius of the envelope than IRS3. The disparity could be caused by a difference in age or mass, orientation of outflow cavities, or the impact of a binary in the IRS1 core.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap

Chinacom 2018 - 13th EAI International Conference on Communications and Networking in China, 23-25 October 2018, Chengdu, ChinaThis is the author accepted manuscript. the final version is available from Springer Verlag via the DOI in this recordWe investigate the potential of applying cooperative relaying and network coding techniques to support vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication in vehicular cloud networks (VCN). A reuse-mode MIMO content distribution system with multiple sources, multiple relays, and multiple destinations under Nakagami-m fading is considered. We apply a class of finite field network codes in the relays to achieve high spatial diversity in an efficient manner and derive the system communication error probability that the destinations fail to recover the desired source messages. The results show that our method can improve the performance over conventional data transmission solutions

Application of the Large-N_c limit to a Chiral Lagrangian with Resonances

It is shown that the implementation of the Large--NcN_c approximation helps to get insight into the structure of, in principle, any QCD-like theory. As an example, we will compute the NLO corrections to L10L_{10} in the chiral limit with a Lagrangian with Resonances.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure.
